What type of oil boiler do I need for my house?
This boiler would normally be sited in the utility room or garage. This boiler can either be fitted open vented,i.e, with a header tank in the loft, or a sealed system with a separate pump and controls. The flue can either go through an external wall at the level of the top of the boiler casing, or can be taken up higher to either avoid an external structure or to make sure that fumes/steam are not a nuisance. A vertical flue kit is made of of separate flue sections joined together with clips, and then through a roof flashing to terminate above the roof
This boiler has the same specification, but has an internal pump and expansion vessel, this is common in modern houses, and has the same flue options as the heat only boiler.
Similar specification to the system oil boiler, but has an additional tank and controls so that there is no need for a hot water cylinder. It retains 20L of hot water and automatically heats water when you open a tap. This has the same flue options ad the system boiler.
These boilers can either be system boilers or combination boilers. The only difference to the internal boilers is that they have an insulated powder coated steel case and a short flue. These are popular as they free up space inside the house, but also for servicing and repairs are much more convenient, as this avoids dirt and spillages inside.
My oil boiler has stopped running, what do I check?
5 point check list for Oil Boilers
Check Fuse
First of all look at the programmer/timer and check that there is a display and it shows a power light. If no there is no display you will need to check the fuse located on the wall.

If there is power to the programmer/timer, check water pressure, this is usually on a small pressure gauge, the correct pressure is around 1 bar, or if no numbers it will be in the green area.

If the pressure is too low, top up the water to just over 1 bar. On most oil boilers this will be by using the filling loop, which is a small stainless steel hose with a small valve on each end, open both valves and fill to just over 1 bar, and then close valves, do not overfill.

Check thermostat
It may be that the boiler has overheated, due to a failed thermostat or low water pressure. The boiler is fitted with an overheat thermostat, which will either be a small red reset button located under the thermostat

control panel or on the back of the panel, or it may be on the front panel under a small black screw on cap (1)you will have to remove the door casing or the top casing to see it. If it has “popped” it will click back in and the boiler will restart. If you cannot see an obvious reason for it to overheat, just turn the thermostat on the boiler down by ¼ and monitor operation.
Check the burner reset button
If the water pressure is within range, check the burner reset button. This is either a clear or red button (2) which will glow if the ignition has failed. Press the button and the boiler should restart,

if it does not, or it starts and then stops, check the photocell. The photocell is a push fit with a black wire in the middle of the burner, it will just pull out. The end should be clean, if not, clean with kitchen cleaner and kitchen roll and retry.
Check Oil Level
If the boiler does not start check oil level in tank-some tanks have a sight gauge which you have to pull out a small knob to read the correct level-if in any doubt find a garden cane or brush handle and

open the filling cap and “dip” the tank, then take it out and place next to tank to check level-anything less than 100mm is empty!
